He wrote them as dialogues, staging the case between Salviati, Sagredo, and Simplicio so that a reader watches an intelligent layman reason his way to a conclusion over four days rather than receiving one from a lectern — a structure that dramatizes discovery even though Galileo never theorized it as pedagogy. His entire career at Pisa and Padua ran against the scholastic method of settling questions by citing Aristotle, and his authentic version of the sentiment is a great deal harder than the one attributed to him: that the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.
